This was a fun project in which I reimagined The Hobbit (by J.R.R. Tolkein) in the style of a 90’s sitcom. For this conceptual illustration, I reimagined the scene at the beginning of the movie where the dwarves (now rowdy punks) infiltrated Bilbo’s home.
I researched sitcom protagonist wardrobes and apartments in order to design Bilbo and his home. I researched various punk fashion sub-genres in order to accurately represent a wide variety of characters, both in age and in personal styles. I had lots of fun adding easter eggs both on the dwarf punk designs, and in Bilbo’s apartment.
I read up on profiles of the dwarves in The Hobbit (particularly their movie representations) in order to make homages to the original characters, and include pieces of their designs. For example, Dwalin has many of his same tattoos, and his knuckle dusters read the names of his twin axes. Ori wears knit, as he does in the film. Bombur is the group’s chef, and Oin is the group’s medicine man. Kili and Fili, the two heartthrobs, are designed based on the lead singers from Green Day and Nirvana respectively, the punk heartthrobs of the 90s.
